Client Projects
Client Projects
A strong portfolio is more than a collection of attractive visuals. Client projects show how design thinking can be applied to real-world problems, goals, audiences, and brand requirements. Each project is an opportunity to demonstrate creativity, communication, problem-solving, and attention to detail.
What makes a strong client project?
A successful client project combines creative execution with a clear understanding of the client's objectives. It should communicate the problem, explain the design approach, and demonstrate how the final solution addresses the project's requirements. Showing the process behind the final result can make a portfolio project much more meaningful and convincing.
Types of client projects
Brand Identity
Logos, color systems, typography, brand guidelines, and visual elements designed to create a consistent identity.
Social Media Design
Social posts, promotional graphics, campaigns, banners, and visual content created for digital audiences.
Marketing Materials
Posters, brochures, advertisements, presentations, flyers, and other materials created to support marketing goals.
Digital Experiences
Website graphics, interface concepts, landing pages, visual systems, and other digital design solutions.
From brief to final design
1. Understand the brief: Identify the client's goals, target audience, project requirements, preferred direction, and expected outcome.
2. Research and explore: Study the industry, audience, competitors, visual references, and relevant design directions before developing concepts.
3. Develop the concept: Turn research and ideas into sketches, moodboards, layouts, visual directions, or initial design concepts.
4. Refine the solution: Improve typography, composition, color, imagery, spacing, and other details based on feedback and design objectives.
5. Deliver the final work: Prepare the completed design in the appropriate formats and organize the project for professional presentation.
What to include in your portfolio
Project Overview
Briefly explain who the project was for, what the client needed, and what the main design objective was.
Design Process
Show selected sketches, concepts, explorations, or decisions that demonstrate how the final solution developed.
Final Results
Present polished final designs using realistic mockups or relevant applications whenever they strengthen the presentation.
Project Impact
When appropriate, explain the outcome, improvements, client response, or other meaningful results of the project.
Tips for presenting client work
Focus on the story: Explain the challenge, your thinking, the design solution, and the final outcome instead of displaying images without context.
Show quality over quantity: A smaller collection of well-presented projects can communicate your abilities more effectively than a large collection of unrelated work.
Protect client information: Only share project details, assets, and results that you are permitted to publish.
Keep the presentation consistent: Use clear typography, spacing, mockups, and layouts that allow the work itself to remain the focus.
Your portfolio should show more than what you can create—it should show how you think. Present your client projects with purpose, explain the creative journey, and let each project demonstrate the value you bring as a designer.
