Case Studies

A finished design can show what you created, but a case study can show how and why you created it. By documenting the challenge, research, creative decisions, design process, and final outcome, case studies turn individual projects into meaningful stories that demonstrate your problem-solving skills.

What is a design case study?

A design case study is a detailed presentation of a project that explains the journey from the initial challenge to the final solution. Instead of simply displaying the finished work, it provides context around the project and highlights the decisions, iterations, research, and reasoning that shaped the outcome.

Anatomy of a strong case study

The Challenge

Explain the problem, project requirements, business goals, or communication challenge the design needed to address.

The Research

Share relevant research, audience insights, competitor observations, references, and discoveries that influenced the direction.

The Process

Show selected sketches, concepts, experiments, iterations, and design decisions that led toward the final solution.

The Solution

Present the final design and explain how its visual choices respond to the original challenge and project objectives.

How to build a compelling case study

1. Start with context: Introduce the project, client or organization, target audience, objectives, your role, and the project's scope.

2. Define the problem: Clearly explain what needed to be solved and why the design project mattered.

3. Show the exploration: Include meaningful research, sketches, moodboards, wireframes, concepts, or iterations that demonstrate your thinking.

4. Explain your decisions: Describe why you selected particular colors, typography, layouts, imagery, or visual systems.

5. Present the outcome: Finish with polished visuals and, when available, measurable or meaningful results from the project.

What designers can showcase

Brand Identity

Explain how research and strategy influenced the logo, typography, colors, imagery, and overall identity system.

UI/UX Projects

Show research, user flows, wireframes, interface exploration, prototypes, and the reasoning behind key experience decisions.

Campaign Design

Demonstrate how a central visual concept was adapted across advertisements, social media, print, and digital channels.

Editorial Design

Explore how typography, grids, imagery, hierarchy, and page structure work together to communicate information.

Common case study mistakes

Too much decoration: Avoid letting excessive effects, animations, or unnecessary graphics distract from the actual project story.

No explanation: A gallery of final images does not communicate your design thinking as effectively as a clear process narrative.

Showing everything: Select the most meaningful process images instead of overwhelming readers with every experiment or discarded idea.

Ignoring confidentiality: Only publish client information, project materials, and results that you have permission to share.

Don't just show the design. Tell the story behind it. A thoughtful case study transforms your portfolio from a gallery of images into evidence of your creativity, strategy, problem-solving, and ability to turn challenges into meaningful design solutions.
